Embarking on a mission to revolutionize children's math education, our update today delves into the essential milestones achieved since October 30th, 2023, highlighting our Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) efforts on November 6th.

Unearthing User Requirements

Through surveys and interviews with researchers, we've gathered crucial insights, shaping the app's direction to cater to preschool children's mathematical needs and assist researchers in data analysis.

Crafting Personas

We've developed varied personas, from dedicated mothers to young math enthusiasts, ensuring our design resonates with every user segment.

Sketching

Initial sketches and wireframes, informed by client feedback, laid the groundwork for a user-friendly and interactive design, accommodating the unique needs of young learners.

Redefining with Feedback

Constant iteration based on researcher input has fine-tuned our wireframes, aligning them more closely with our vision of making math both fun and educational.

Conclusion

Our pursuit of creating an impactful educational tool is more robust than ever. With a deep understanding of user needs and a collaborative approach to design, we're on a steadfast path to enriching children's math education.   IOE Researchers and Computer Science students join forces to bring the Maths@Home app to more families.  Maths@Home is a free app targeted at parents and professionals who wish to help children to develop their maths skills through fun learning activities.  The Maths@Home app gives adults a bank of ideas for various games and interactions, which can be played during their daily family routines using resources easily available in and around the home.  The app has been co-created with parents by Prof. Jo Van Herwegen and Dr. Laura Outhwaite from IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society.  The latest version of the app has been made possible through collaboration with the Computer Science student team. A New Direction: Embracing the Maths@Home Challenge

Big news from our team! We were approached by our client and module professor with a project called Maths@Home. We are now assigned to finish this new project. It was a big challenge because the app had been started by someone else but wasn't working or close to finished. We decided to take on this challenge and make the app great, starting from zero based on what our client needed. This meant we had to learn a bunch of new things fast. We dove into using React Native, which was new for us, and got our hands dirty with TypeScript and JavaScript. It was a lot to take on, but we were all in. We wanted to make sure Maths@Home could become the amazing app our client dreamed it could be. And guess what? We did it! We managed all the changes smoothly and stayed ahead of our deadlines.
